Apropå Kristen ekumenik: 15 Maj 1806, skrev den Engelske Baptisten och missionspionjären till Indien, William Carey till Andrew Fuller, sekreteraren för det Baptistiska Missions sällskapet:
“The Cape of Good Hope is now in the hands of the English; Should it continue so, would it not be possible to have a general association of all denominations of Christians, from the four quarters of the world, kept there once in about ten years? I earnestly recommend this plan, let the first meeting be in the year 1810, or 1812 at furtherst. I have no doubt but it would be attended with very important effects; we could understand one another better, and more entirely enter into one another´s views by two hours conversation than by two or three years epistolary correspondence”
William Carey´s vision om att samlas i Cape Town, Sydafrika var enastående men samtidigt 100år före sin tid. T o m Careys missionskollegor i BMS kunde inte ta till sig det. Hur som helst, Careys brev sådde en säd som såsmåningom skulle leda till den första ekumeniska Världsmissions konferensen i Edinburgh, Skottland 1910. Detta blev startskottet för den ekumeniska rörelsen och det Internationella missionsrådet som sedermera ledde till Världskyrkorådet.
